ACRYLICS ~ A type of plastic, which
may be transparent or opaque and can be in varied colors. Lucite and Plexiglass are common acrylics.

ART DECO ~
A style that originated in Paris and was popular from the mid-1920s until the late 1930s. Art deco pieces are characterized
by geometric lines and angles, with very few curves.

BIB NECKLACE ~ A necklace with flowing
pendants or chains at the front that resemble a bib.
CHOKER ~ A short necklace worn high
on the neck.

LUCITE ~ A clear, strong plastic
(acrylic resin) that was patented by the DuPont company in 1937.

MOTHER-OF-PEARL ~ The iridescent coating
on the inside of oyster shells. Mother-of-pearl is often used to make buttons as well as jewelry.
NACRE ~ Another term (derived from French) for mother-of-pearl.
Also used to describe the outer pearlized shell of a faux pearl.

PENDANT ~ An ornament hanging from
a necklace, pins, or earrings.
|
|
RETRO JEWELRY ~ A bold, chunky style
of jewelry popular in the later 1930s and 40s, influenced by Art-Deco machine-age forms. Retro costume jewelry was often
made in vermeil and featured geometric shapes.

|
RHODIUM ~ A silvery gray metal in
the platinum family, that is often mistaken for silver. It is used for plating in costume jewelry because it is unusually
hard and resistant to rust.
|
|
VERMEIL ~ Sterling silver
plated with gold. Also called silver gilt or gold wash. During the 1940s, most American costume jewelry was made of vermeil
sterling silver.
