Using less plastic is a great way to help our
environment. The fact that plastic doesn't biodegrade means it often ends up in our oceans and streams and litters our highways.
Plastic is made from oil so cutting back on plastic helps preserve natural resources. There are many things you can do to
reduce your use of plastic. Even small changes in our daily lives can make a huge difference.
Disposable Plastic Water Bottles:
Instead
of buying disposable water bottles use your own water bottle and refill it with filtered water or tap water. There are MANY
options available from reusable plastic bottles, stainless steel or glass in every size imaginable.
Brown Bag It:
Instead of using a paper bag,
try one of the new reusable cotton or nylon lunch bags or try a lunch box. Pack your sandwiches in wax paper or use
reusable sandwich wrappers. When using plastic containers make sure they are reusable or use glass.
When Eating
Out:
Carry your own reusable containers for your leftovers. Your server should be happy to use the container you bring.
Not only will it help the environment since restaurants use styrofoam or plastic...it will save the restaurant money!
Use
Reusable Grocery Sacks:
There are many reusable bag options today. I sell several great options here at beachcat's
bargains. You can find bags for packing groceries and carrying your produce. Rather than reaching for several small
plastic bags in the produce section, bring your own! Reusable grocery bags are easy to carry and hold more than regular plastic
bags.
Use Reusable Shoppping Totes:
Bring your own bags when shopping ANYWHERE or refuse a bag for smaller
items that you can easily carry on your own or in a bag you already have with you.
Use Biodegradable Alternatives
to Plastic:
There are biodegradable dog poop bags, and many coffee houses and cafes use biodegradable cups, utensils and
containers. Products made from corn and sugar cane are easy to compost and break down over time.
Think:
Before
you purchase other plastic items you use daily, like pens, toothbrushes, combs and MANY other items, look for alternatives
that come in earth-friendly forms. Next time you're ready to toss one of these items, think about replacing it with an alternative
version.
